Brewery Radar • April 2023

Brewery Radar serves the brewing industry by keeping it up to date with the progress of planned breweries, expansions, and tap rooms in Australia. We aim to track where they are in their development process from concept to opening.

This month, we have updates from 28 breweries or brands with:

  • 5 brewery openings;
  • 5 new bars or venues;
  • 2 new contract brands;
  • 2 sales and one exit; and
  • another 14 in various stages of planning and development.

QLD

Iron Works Brewery in Brandon, North Queensland, officially started pouring beers in its new tap room in late March.  Iron Works Brewery launched in 2016 and the tap house has been added to the old foundry. It caters to about 25 people at any one time and offers 10 different beers.

Brouhaha opened a new pop-up bar, the Brouhaha Craft Beer Cafe in New Farm, Brisbane, in mid March.

Spangled Drongo Brewing Company served its last beer at its pop up bar in the M-Arts Precinct in mid-October.  Their new brewery is being commissioned at their new home in the South Murwillumbah industrial estate and they expect the first commercial beer to be on shelves in late May.

New brewing company, Padre Brewing Co, based on the Gold Coast, launched its website and stockists of its first couple of beers.

Hip Hops Brewers has continued to update its followers on the progress of the internal fit out of their building – most recently announcing that the beer taps are in and a conditional licence has been approved.  Hip Hops, which is located in The Sheds at Brendale, is anticipated to open at the end of April 2023.

Hodfellow’s Brewing Company has updated their followers, announcing they are “inching towards starting production of trial batches.”   The Geebung based brewery confirmed the electrical works to the brewhouse are finished.

Range Brewing Co announced Patio by Range which is due to open in the Brisbane suburb of Paddington in May 2023.  Range says that “Patio promises a whole different kind of drinking experience from our taprooms – leaning into our Queensland way of life, in a setting that feels more like a home than a bar.”

The Crimson Finch received approvals for the development of its brewery on Anzac parade, Yeppoon, in early February.  Since then the brewery has provided an update to its followers, announcing that the interior design and planning, and licencing applications, are underway.

4 Pines has recently taken over a bar in Noosa Junction and opened the doors as 4 Pines Noosa on 4  April 2023.  4 Pines says “This coastal inspired venue will feature 12 taps of the freshest 4 Pines beers, balanced food offering of pub classics and fresh seafood, and live in the pines till’ late.”

4 Pines has also recently announced the launch of The Sporting Globe x 4 Pines, a brewpub offshoot of the sports bar brand, which will take the place of the old Hard Rock Cafe in the Paradise Centre on the Gold Coast.  The venue is earmarked as opening by summer 2024.

VIC

Brewers Collective opened in late March in Short St in the heart of Bendigo.  The Brewery is co-owned by four mates: Brett Davis, Simon Francis, Randall Firli, and Neil Towan. Simon Francis said  “It’s been a long process to open, definitely not an overnight idea, we’ve all wanted to support our amazing brewer friend Brett, but opening a brewery is complex and it’s been several years in the making.”

Local Brewing Co opened the doors of its new taproom in Clifton Hill on the last weekend of March.  This is the culmination of years of effort after the company first launched in 2019.

Local Brewing Co say that “the venue has been designed to minimise its environmental impact at every stage, from sourcing local ingredients, using renewable energy on the roof and giving old pub tables a new lease of life.”  The brewing equipment is currently being manufactured and is due for installation and commissioning before July 2023.

Barwon Heads Brewing Co, which opened its micro brewery in Ocean Grove in 2021, celebrated the announcement of its new bar. The 17th Deck is a public access bar at the 13th Beach Golf Links.

Smiley Brewing, in Packenham, is progressing with its new brewery, announcing to followers on Facebook that “the frame [is] all up, a lot of the walls sheeted, electrical and plumbing roughed in and in the last week and a half all our equipment has arrived and is almost fully setup!”

Rhyll Brewery & Distillery  announced that Council approved their application for the development of a brewery and distillery in Rhyll, Phillip Island.  The brewery says it is now working on the interior planning with construction to commence ‘soon.’

Contract brewer, Exit Brewing, has announced it is winding up its business after nine years in the industry.

ACT

Cypher Brewing Co officially opens its doors on 15 April 2023 in Gungahlin.   Matt Thiele, who was previously at Capital Brewing Co, has joined as Head Brewer.

NSW

Quantum Brewery formally opened in early March in Moruya, NSW as part of the Moruya Artisan Factory. Formerly known to the locals as Cheddar House or the Old Cheese Factory Moruya, it is now home to the GraniteTown CafeBar and Quantum Brewery.

Thirsty Messiah Brewing is due to open its doors to the public in Broadmeadow, Newcastle, imminently with the owners most recently saying “just after Easter.”    The will have forty taps and serve beer from around the Hunter Valley region.

Prickly Pete and the Wolf is a new gypsy brewer that officially launched its website and its first beer, a Hazy IPA.

The owners of Styx Brewery in Newcastle have announced the brewery is for sale.

SA

Hedonbar Brewing Company opened its doors to the public in late March, with the owners describing it as “3 years in the making.”   The Brewery is located at the Copper Coast Tourism Centre, just outside Kadina on the Yorke Peninsula.   The Brewery plans to focus on small batch sizes ranging between 600 – 800 Litres.

Little Blessings Brewery is continuing to make progress on the redevelopment of an old church into its new taphouse in Laura, SA.   The Brewery announced that stonemasons have finished fixing the church walls, the floors are in and the 100-year-old front fence has been painted.  They currently expect to open in September.

Adelaide based urban planner Mark Kwiatkowski has submitted a development application for the development of a brewery, distillery, bar and restaurant at the Big Orange.

WA

Spinifex Brewing Co announced the opening of the Food Innovation Precinct WA, which is located in Stake Hill.  It is a foundation tenant and is situated in the Food and Beverage Production Centre in the precinct. Spinifex’s 24HL brewery and warehouse are still undergoing fit out and commissioning.

Spinifex also recently updated members on the status of the Cable Beach Ale House stating ‘We’re officially 3 -weeks ahead of schedule and with all structures in place for all three buildings, it’s really starting to come together. Fit out will commence in the next couple of months and we’re on track to open in late 2023!”

Fox Friday Craft Brewery has announced it will be taking over the location of Blasta Brewing Co in Burswood when Blasta move to their new venue in around the middle of year.

Blasta Brewing Co announced that it has successfully installed and commissioned its new Krones brewhouse and has produced its first commercial beer.   Blasta expects its new HQ to open in May 2023, which will include a unique ‘departure lounge’ experience with shower, luggage storage, business facilities and a complimentary shuttle to the airport.

Co-Lab Brewing Co applied for development approval for a tavern and brewery comprising a bar, lounge and brewing area of 330m2, with a maximum occupancy of 335 people in Bassendean, Perth.  The application closed to public comment at the end of January.
