Barley’s Angels comes to Brisbane
Barley’s Angels, the beer appreciation group run by women for women, has established a Brisbane chapter.
Organised by passionate beer devotee Deb Parker, the group will be based at Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge Hotel with the first meeting to be held on Tuesday, 11 October.
Deb has established herself as a bit of a fixture on the craft beer appreciation landscape, having made a point of visiting just about every major beer event on the east coast as ‘research’ over the last year or two. She has been working to bring Barley’s Angels to Brisbane since it was launched in Australia by Beer Diva, Kirrily Waldhorn, early this year.
Barley’s Angels, the consumer outreach arm of the Pink Boots Society, is committed to involving women in the enjoyment of craft beer by creating environments where women can learn more about beer in a friendly, educational and supportive atmosphere, thus creating more women beer enthusiasts, and, ultimately, involving more women in beer- and brewery-related careers.
Deb says her interest in craft beer was sparked by a trip to the Hunter Valley a few years ago.
“Back then I would have told you that I didn’t drink beer,” she said.
“However, an afternoon with the lovely Jess at Potter’s Brewery changed my world. I was introduced to the ‘craft beer experience’ and now I am a devotee.
“I have developed a passion for craft beer and every chance I get I will visit a new brewery to see what I can discover.”
Deb hopes that by bringing Barley’s Angels to Brisbane, the group’s unique form of conversation and education will encourage more women to confidently take up the challenge of supporting craft brewing.
Deb doesn’t cite any one beer as being her epiphany beer, saying it was a gradually process.
“Coming to understand and appreciate the many and varied styles, flavours, aromas and food pairings is what changed my original perception,” she explains.
“I would have to say, to my initial surprise, it is the darker, bolder brews that I most enjoy. The Holgate Temptress tried for the first time at the Milking the Cow Beer Festival comes to mind.
“For me, there is a different beer to be enjoyed for every occasion, mood, whim or whatever I can come up with!”
