Beacon Brewing Company, Victoria
After having been idle for most of 2009, the little brewery at Geelong’s Scottish Chief’s Tavern has recently been reactivated.
Barwon Heads home brewer Dan Cunningham took the lease of the brewery at the end of last year and now runs his Beacon Brewing Company from the facility. He is currently producing two beers—Beacon Bitter and Beacon Pale Ale—which are available from the Scottish Chief’s Tavern and from a growing list of other outlets. Cunningham produces only draught beer at the moment, but he plans to install a bottle filler and to bottle small batches of specialty lines.
The Scottish Chief’s Tavern Brewery first began operating early in 1990, but it had a fatal association with the Pyramid Building Society which collapsed the same year. It re-commenced in 1996 when the brewery was leased to Gavin Gamble who ran it first as Steampacket Brewing Company, then from 2002 as Fitzroy Brewing Company. In 2006 the brewery was taken over by Damian Nippard who operated under the name What’s Brewing Company.
Dan Cunningham is the latest independent brewer to base his operation at the Scottish Chief’s. It is Dan’s first commercial brewery, and is a stepping stone towards his goal of one day opening his own microbrewery closer to his home at Barwon Heads on the Bellarine Peninsula.
