Mo-vem-beer shaves the day
Way back in 2007 (I think) I was asked to join in and grow-a-mo for Movember. Trawling through old photo albums (I’ll explain what those things are later, kids) I found one photo in which I was sporting as much as I ever achieved that wasn’t just a lazy three-day-growth.
I would be relegated to making donations to mates efforts instead.
Movember was a mere 4 years old here in Australia back then and, while I am the first to support a worthy cause and raise awareness, I draw the line at doing something that deliberately makes me look like a cross between a bad Magnum PI look-alike and well-worn ginger bath mat.
It occurred to me then that some blokes just weren’t meant to sport facial hair.
I came up with the concept of MoVemBeer, a grass-roots movement (it was basically contained to my Beer Blokes blog and read by as many as three or four people on a good day) designed specifically for blokes who wanted to do the right thing but didn’t want to be lumped into the same hairsuit company as other blokes who thought they looked good with a Mo. Hitler, Stalin and Ricky Gervais spring to mind.
MoVemBeer is simple. Instead of growing, get growler-ing – or canning, pinting or bottling – your favourite craft beer and donate the equivalent cost to a mate participating or directly to the Movember website. But, it’s not that simple. The beers you choose must have a ‘MO’ in there somewhere.
Here’s where you get to be creative – the ‘MO’ can be squeezed into just about any beer you can name. you just need to squeeze and squint and maybe bend the rules of grammar to do it.
Easy MoVemBeer beers include Mountain Goat, MOrnington Brewery, MOondog and MOnteith’s. With a little thought you could include Red Hill or Hix (MOrnington Peninsula breweries), 4 Pines or Murray’s (they are in Manly and MOst people hate Manly as much as they hate Collingwood) or Kooinda, Cavalier, The Rocks Brewing or Young Henry’s (who all Moved from original locations).
Even mainstream brands like Cascade, which recently gave their range a Make Over can be shoe-horned into the criteria.
See? Easy!
Get into it and start donating through responsible consumption of your favourite craft beers.
If you have a particularly creative MoVemBeer to add to the list, drop us a line in the comments section. I’ll send a copy of The Critics’ Choice to the most imaginative.
What are you waiting for? MOve!!
