We’re chuffed to announce that Max Hämmerle has been appointed Head Brewer at Philter.

Max has worked as Lead Brewer under Sam Füss over the past 8 months. In that time, he’s proven himself the king of consistency, delivering brew after perfect brew. Max’s first recipe formulation for Philter was made to celebrate our 5th Birthday – the Cold IPA. We can all agree it is an exquisitely balanced banger of a beer.

Max hails from Passau in Bavaria, Germany where he studied and received his Bachelor of Engineering in Brewing & Beverage Technology at Bavaria’s Weihenstephan University before cutting his teeth at Riedenburger Brauhaus. Max is passionate about travel and soon found himself on a plane to Sydney where he commenced a 5-year tenure as Senior Brewer at the Australian Brewery. He joined Team Philter in 2021 and the fit was right from the start.

‘I’ve never seen brewing as just a job, it’s a lifestyle for me. Philter’s been great so far, we already have some of the best beers in the country and I can’t wait to put my personal stamp on things as Head Brewer’ says Max.

‘Max embodies that Philter spirit. He hit the ground running when he started with us and hasn’t stopped. He’s already introduced some new initiatives into the production team. We’re so excited to have him take the helm and can’t wait to see what he does next’ says Managing Director, Mick Neil.

Every silver lining has its cloud and as Max is stepping up, Sam is stepping out of the business from the end of May. As our indomitable founding Head Brewer, Samara Füss has been a creative force within Philter for five years. While she remains a shareholder, Sam is leaving the hard yakka of the brewery in Max’s capable hands and will be taking the time to see the world and spend time with family. She’s incomparable and beloved by us all. We’ll miss your seeing your face every day, Sam.
