Rocks Brewing Co opens their brewery & generally wins at life

SYDNEY: With much clinking of pint glasses, Rocks Brewing Co has cranked up their new brewing equipment and opened their Brewery Bar to the public.

Located in the formerly desolate industrial wasteland of Alexandria, Rocks Brewing Co Brewery Bar is set to fire up the drinking and dining scene of the up-and-coming Sydney suburb. Locals and visitors alike can enjoy a beer or two straight from the brewery, alongside some cracking cuisine – house-smoked beef brisket anyone? – all while watching the brewers work up a sweat slaving over Australia’s first ever craft beer mash filter brewhouse. Which is what Managing Director Mark Fethers will be doing, beer in hand.

“This has been a long time coming,” he says. “Having put six years of my life into this company, along with pretty much every penny I have – and every penny the bank would lend me. It’s nice to not be the gypsy brewing whores of the Aussie craft beer scene anymore. It’s good to finally have a home.”

Happy to finally have his own toys to play with, Head Brewer Scott Morgan is hard at work brewing the beers that have made Rocks Brewing Co a mainstay in the best craft beer venuesand retailers in Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane and around regional New South Wales.

“The brewery is the bomb,” he says. “I think we’ve overachieved on how good this place looks – I get a firm feeling in the pants just walking into the plant. With a cranking boiler, huge glycol system and fantastic IDD brewhouse we are smashing the beer through in no time and it tastes awesome out of tank. And we should know, we’ve ‘tested’ more than a few…”

When he’s finished testing the merchandise, Morgan will be kegging the first of the Hangman – an American-style Pale Ale – in readiness for Craft Beer Rising on February 22, which is also the official launch of the Brewery Bar to the public.

Also currently pushing buttons in the brewhouse is Aussie ex-pat brewer Ben Lansberry, who can normally be found manning the kettle at The Kernel Brewery, London – he has previously also slaved at Camden Town Brewery, London. Used to creating one-off brews, Lansberry has been let loose on the system, cranking out a beer that he has affectionately named FEZ. The Foreign Extra Stout is available at the brewery and will be making a star appearance at Newcastle Craft Beer Week at The Pourhouse, Warners at the Bay, and Newcastle Club. The brew packs a hoppy, chocolate punch at 6.7% ABV and 70IBU (International Bitterness Units). FEZ is another addition to the Brewery’s Conviction Series of limited edition beers

Located in Sydney Corporate Park – 160 Bourke Rd Alexandria – the new Brewery Bar is open from 7.30am for coffee (and soon for breakfast) and from 10am until 10pm for beer, snacks and meals.
