Fresh from being named Australia’s hippest city by Lonely Planet, it’s been announced that Brisbane is to get yet another specialty craft beer bar.

Brian Kennedy and Emily Russell, who launched Newstead beer Mecca Tippler’s Tap a little over a year ago, have announced plans for a second beer bar to be opened in Brisbane’s Southbank Parklands.

Located on Grey St within the South Bank Precinct at the site formally occupied by restaurant Piaf, the bar is set to open in early April. Expected to be slightly larger than the existing Tippler’s Tap, the Tomahawk Bar will seat about 80 to 100 people and will offer 10 – 12 rotating taps of independent craft beer, a wide selection of bottles, a moderate selection of quality wines more than tipplers and a bit higher level and growlers.

The food offering is yet to be finalised but is expected to be casual with a focus on value and pairing with beer. Unlike Tippler’s It will not be specifically “themed”. Brews News understands that Key figures at Tipplers Carl Rhodes and chef Ali Orchard have been involved from the start and will have integral roles at the new venue.

The addition of the new venue sees yet another craft beer precinct forming in the Queensland capital, with the Newstead/Teneriffe area, Milton/Caxton Street and now South Bank area all seeing groupings of breweries and beer venues. South Bank will be home to a new James Squire Brew Pub later this year as well.
