Open over Christmas?

I am, unfortunately, old enough to remember back to the days of the weekend petrol roster when only a handful of service stations (yes kids, they used to be called that and you never used to have to leave your car…) would be open over a weekend and radio stations would broadcast which ones were one roster as a service to motorists. I’m not old enough to understand the need for a petrol roster, but it was back even before the days of having only one night of ‘late night shopping’ and all of the shops closed on Saturdays at midday with no Sunday trading. Ahh, the olden days.

Anyway, Wellington’s Hashigo Zake has wanted to let our many Kiwi readers – and presumably Aussies on holidays over there – that they are indeed open for the duration and those wanting to satisfy their need for good beer can have it met there.

In the spirit of the weekend petrol roster of my childhood, any other good beer venues open over the break are free to let us know their dates and hours and we might start up a Christmas Beer Roster if there is sufficient interest.

Let us know here.

Some Hospitality Businesses stay open on public holidays.

In spite of a statement by Hospitality New Zealand, some hospitality outlets are happy to open during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

“We have no reservations about complying with whatever holiday pay rates the Holidays Act mandates,” says Hashigo Zake Proprietor Dominic Kelly. “Our staff have done fantastic work this year and have earned a break. So if we ask them to work when others are on holiday they deserve to be paid accordingly.”

He continued: “Last year Boxing Day was one of our most enjoyable trading days of the year. A succession of visitors to Wellington and regular customers were delighted to find us open. We have no regrets about trading on statutory holidays.”

Hashigo Zake at 25 Taranaki St, Wellington will open its doors every day at midday, as usual, except Christmas Day. Closing on Christmas Day is a requirement of the Sale of Liquor Act.
