It’s been one year since Shelter Brewing Co officially opened its doors, and since then it has served over half a million customers more than 300,000 beers, close to 400,000 meals including 60,000 pizzas and 33,000 chips, and 100,000 coffees and 10,000 house-baked cinnamon scrolls.
To thank the local community for welcoming Shelter to the Busselton Foreshore, the family-owned brewery hosted two free parties, one for families and rocking party for adults.
On Saturday 6th November 2021, Shelter’s Family Fun Day saw the grassy lawn area in front of the brewery become a mini festival with pony rides, face painting, mermaids, the biggest bouncy castle in the southern hemisphere, games and more, all free.
Hundreds of families enjoyed the free activities, and in a stroke of good timing, the RAAF did a training flyover with two jets, adding to the excitement.
After the little kids had their fun, Shelter staff got busy clearing tables and chairs for the big kids to party to The Southern River Band, one WA’s most energetic live rock ’n’ roll party bands, along with DJ Genga.
The free event included 400 free pints (to those who pre-registered) and the electric vibe had the capacity crowd of 700 dancing the night away until close at midnight.
In attendance was City of Busselton Mayor Grant Henley and CEO Mike Archer, and all six of Shelter’s Directors, namely brothers Matt, Jason, Mike and Chris Credaro and brothers Zeb and Asher Packard-Hair.
Shelter General Manager Paul Maley says that the response to Shelter from the local community has been positive from day one.
“It’s been humbling and very rewarding to see Shelter embraced so warmly by the locals,” says Maley.
“We want to celebrate Shelter’s first birthday with those who help make it the great place it is, we want to celebrate with the locals and give them a free event and a beer to say thanks
“Shelter has been open for just one year, but so many people say that it feels like it’s always been a part of the Busselton Foreshore,” says Maley.
Shelter brews four core beers namely, Extra Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, Lager, and Summer Sour which uses salt water from Geographe Bay. Adding to the list is Shelter’s Pale Ale, which is only available on tap from Shelter and will be released in cans in the coming weeks.
Maley says that Shelter is more than a craft brewery.
“When we built Shelter, we always said that it’d be a place for locals to meet, families to get together and for visitors to stop in for a quick coldie, a meal or a longer session and it’s fantastic to see it become just that,” Maley said.
Shelter’s architecture is centred around the working state-of-the-art brewery which has the capacity to brew up to a million litres of beer per year.
There are 140 people employed at Shelter Brewing Co making it one of the largest private employers in Busselton.
“We often receive a lot of great feedback about our staff and service at Shelter, we’re really proud of our team here – and with summer coming up, we’re looking for more great people who love working in hospitality to join the team.”
