Wet Hop Red Bock – by Barrow Boys Brewing and Blackman’s Brewery

On March 16th Ash Hazell (Barrow Boys), took a 3 hour drive north to Bright in Victoria’s High Country. His destination, Rostrevor Hop Farm to collect 20 kg’s of fresh, wet Galaxy hops straight from the bine.

Ash and Renn Blackman (Blackman’s) got chatting over a few brews post Ballarat Beer Festival, and decided they just had to get their hands on some wet hops at harvest time. As the saying goes, “always do sober what you said you’d do…” they followed up with a killer recipe for a Wet Hop Red Bock and Galaxy was deemed ‘the one’, due to its distinct citrus aroma.

Brew day was scheduled early the morning after Ash collected fresh hops from the bine, and drove the 20kg’s of Galaxy down to the coast (to this day, Ash’s car still smells of the delicious citrus buds). With the intentions of making a red coloured beer, Ash and Renn Mashed in a blend of malts – Pilsner, Cara Red, Munich T 3, Munich and Wheat.

No hop additions were made through the boil, all hops were added in a makeshift hop back using the Lauter Tun. Using this method meant the hops were added as late as possible, to extract as much flavour and aroma from the fresh green hops as possible. The whole brewery smelt amazing!

The Result… Wet Hop Red Bock 5.8% ABV
Red hue in colour, with subtle caramel from the malt. Fresh, wet Galaxy hops gives a distinct floral aroma and layers of melon, passionfruit. There is a medium bitter bite and the back end rounds off for a malty finish, and a balanced very drinkable beer!
